NAIDOC Week 7 - 14 July 2019

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

This years’ theme is: VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH.

The Indigenous voice of this country is over 65,000 plus years old. There were once over 300 recorded languages in Australia. Only 13 traditional Indigenous languages are still acquired by children and approximately another 100 or so are spoken to various degrees by older generations, with many of these languages at risk as Elders pass away.

2019 is also being celebrated as the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Language.
